storage
worldview of『庫』
The things inside a storehouse are not all meant to be used today.
Rice gathered in autumn is saved.
Vegetables are preserved.
Tools are stored.
In this way, something we have now can be carried forward into a season that has not yet arrived.
Saving something can be a way of helping our future selves.
But keeping everything is not enough.
If a storehouse becomes so crowded that nothing can be found, what was saved may no longer be useful.
So Grandmother thinks ahead.
Things needed in winter stay near the front.
Things that can wait until spring go farther back.
A 庫 is therefore not simply a place for accumulating things.
It is a place where we choose what to keep, protect it, and make sure it can be found when it is needed.
Autumn is still in the garden,
but Grandmother is already thinking about winter.
Perhaps 庫 reminds us to value what we have now while also preparing for what comes next—
preserving something in the present so that it can serve the future.

story of『庫』
One late-autumn afternoon, yellow leaves drifted from the trees.
Snow was already visible on the distant mountains.
As the girl and her older brother crossed the yard, Grandmother opened the heavy doors of the storehouse.
“Today we prepare for winter.”
The girl peered inside.
There were shelves filled with
wooden boxes,
baskets,
large jars,
rice,
dried foods,
and vegetables kept for later.
“There’s so much!”
“We’ll need these things during winter.”
Her brother lifted a wooden box.
“Where does this go?”
“Farther back,” Grandmother said.
The girl picked up a smaller basket.
“What about this?”
“Keep that near the front.”
“Why?”
“We’ll use it soon after winter begins.”
“Can’t we put it in the back?”
“We could. But then we would have to search for it every time we needed it.”
The girl imagined herself on a freezing winter day, searching through the darkest corner of the storehouse.
“The front is better.”
Grandmother smiled.
Then she pointed toward another box.
“We won’t need that until spring, so it can stay farther back.”
“You’re already thinking about spring?”
“Of course.”
Grandmother looked outside.
There was no snow in the yard yet,
but the mountains were already white.
“Winter will be here soon.”
The three continued working.
Things they would need soon went near the front.
Things for later went farther back.
Items that needed to stay dry were placed higher.
Heavy things stayed below.
Gradually, the girl understood.
A storehouse was not a place where things were simply pushed into any empty space.
“Grandma?”
“Yes?”
“Why do we keep all of this?”
“Because we don’t have to use everything now.”
“But we have it now.”
“That is exactly why we can save some for later.”
The girl looked into her basket.
Things gathered in autumn could remain until winter.
Some might remain even until spring.
“For the future?”
Grandmother nodded.
“Yes.”
By the time they finished, the evening sunlight reached deep into the storehouse.
There were still many things inside,
but now everything seemed to have its place.
They knew what was there,
where it belonged,
and when it would be needed.
Grandmother reached for the door.
“Now we’re ready for winter.”
The girl looked once more toward the snowy mountains.
Winter had not arrived yet.
But some of what they would need was already waiting for them.
The heavy wooden doors slowly closed.
Inside the storehouse,
the gifts of autumn quietly waited for winter.
