story of『栃』
Soft autumn sunlight
bathes the mountain village
in gentle shades of gold.
The great horse chestnut tree
has once again offered
its generous harvest.
On the engawa,
the grandfather and two children
carefully peel each chestnut by hand.
"These nuts cannot be eaten right away,"
the grandfather says with a gentle smile.
*"They are bitter at first.
But with patience,
care,
and time to remove their bitterness,
they become food
that has sustained people
for generations."*
The young boy gently places each nut
into a woven basket.
The young girl quietly separates
the shells with careful hands.
Nature rarely gives its gifts
all at once.
It teaches us to wait.
To care.
To learn.
And to trust the passing of time.
A gentle mountain breeze
stirs the broad leaves of the horse chestnut tree.
From grandparent to child,
from child to the future,
the wisdom of living with nature
is quietly passed on,
one season at a time.
