worldview of『陸』
Every day, we walk upon the land.
Yet we rarely stop to remember that it is there.
When we leave home in the morning.
When we walk to school.
When someone tends a field.
When we travel to meet another person.
The earth is always beneath our feet.
Mountains and towns may appear far apart.
Fields and coastlines may seem like separate worlds.
But from a high place, we can see that they all rest upon one continuous expanse of land.
Trees grow upon it.
Crops take root in it.
Homes are built upon it.
People meet, and roads stretch from one place to another.
The land says nothing.
It does not choose whose footsteps it will carry.
It simply remains beneath everything, supporting life through the passing years.
Perhaps the things that matter most are sometimes like that.
So constant that we forget to notice them.
So fundamental that we understand their importance only when they are gone.
The 陸 the girl discovered from the mountaintop was no longer merely a shape on a map.
It was the great ground connecting her home with someone else’s home, the forest with the fields, and her small town with places far beyond the horizon.
And today, as on every other day, we continue on our way—quietly carried by the earth beneath us.
land
story of『陸』
One summer morning, a little girl climbed a mountain trail with her grandfather.
They passed beneath the trees and reached the top of the final slope.
Suddenly, the sky opened wide before them.
“Wow...!”
Below stretched a vast landscape.
A river flowed down from the mountains, winding between fields, passing beneath bridges and through a town before finally reaching the sea.
Tiny houses.
Neatly divided rice fields.
People walking along narrow roads.
Her grandfather pointed into the distance.
“Do you see the sea over there and the land on this side? What makes them different?”
The girl thought for a moment.
“Is land the place where there isn’t any water?”
Her grandfather smiled.
“That’s right. But there is something else interesting about land.”
They sat down and looked across the landscape once more.
Rice was growing in the fields.
People were living in the town.
Trees covered the mountains, and birds flew above them.
“The land has been supporting all of them from underneath, all this time.”
The girl looked down at her feet.
It was the same earth she had been walking over without a thought.
The mountain trail, the fields, the town, even the distant cape—
things that seemed separate from high above were all connected by one continuous stretch of land.
On the way home, the girl began to notice the earth beneath her feet with every step.
She, too, was living upon this enormous land.
And somehow, that thought made the familiar path home look a little different.
