worldview of『険』
When we stand before a difficult path, we become afraid.
Sometimes we wish we could simply become people who are never frightened.
But is fear always something that gets in our way?
Because we fear the cliff, we watch our footing.
Because we fear falling, we hold the railing.
Because we fear becoming lost, we check the map.
Fear can sometimes be like a small bell ringing inside us to keep us safe.
What matters is not silencing that bell.
It is listening to it while still searching for the step we are able to take.
Life has rugged paths too.
Days whose endings we cannot see.
Walls we are certain we cannot cross.
Summits so distant that merely looking toward them leaves us tired.
At such times, we do not have to travel the entire distance at once.
Just reach the next stone.
And once there, find the one after that.
A single step may seem small, but enough small steps can quietly change the landscape around us.
What the girl learned in the mountains was not how to stop being afraid.
She learned how to choose her next step while carrying that fear with her.
険 is not a kanji that simply tells us, “Do not go.”
It quietly reminds us:
From here onward, look carefully—and walk with care.

story of『険』
The mountain trail had gradually become narrower.
A wall of rock rose beside the girl.
On the other side, a deep valley dropped far below.
The girl, who had been walking happily only moments before, suddenly stopped.
“Grandpa... I’m scared.”
Her grandfather stopped too.
But he did not say, “There’s nothing to be afraid of.”
“Yes,” he said. “This is a frightening place.”
The girl looked up at him in surprise.
“Is it okay to be scared?”
“Of course. Because you’re scared, you watch where you step. Because you’re scared, you hold the chain tightly. Up here, the part of your heart that warns you of danger is important too.”
The girl looked at the trail again.
When she stared toward the distant summit, reaching it seemed impossible.
“Do you think I can make it all the way?”
Her grandfather pointed with his walking stick to a flat stone just ahead of her.
“Don’t worry about the summit yet. For now, just reach that stone.”
The girl gripped the chain and took one step.
“What next?”
“The next stone.”
Another step.
One step.
Then another.
After a while, the girl looked behind her.
The place where fear had frozen her feet was already far away.
Sunlight broke through the clouds and fell across the rugged mountains.
The girl smiled a little.
“I’m not scared anymore.”
Her grandfather shook his head.
“I think you probably still are.”
Then he smiled.
“But now you know you can keep moving.”
The girl turned forward again.
The trail ahead was still steep and difficult.
But this time, instead of staring at the summit, she knew how to look for the next step.
