worldview of『階』
When we look toward a high place, it can seem very far away.
Dreams can feel the same.
Something we want to learn.
A place we hope to reach.
A person we hope to become.
If we look only at the very top, we may begin to think, “I could never get there.”
But there is something remarkable about a staircase.
It takes a height too great to reach at once and divides it into smaller, reachable steps.
One step today.
Another tomorrow.
Sometimes we may stop.
Sometimes we may even step backward.
And still, when we are ready, there is another stair waiting for us.
While climbing, we do not always notice how far we have come.
There is always another step directly in front of us.
At such times, it can help to turn around.
The place where our former self once stood may be much farther below than we realized.
The grandmother watching the girl cannot climb the stairs for her.
But she can remain below and say, “Look how far you’ve come.”
Perhaps growing does not depend only on the feet of the person moving forward.
There are those who climb.
Those who watch over them.
Those who encourage them.
And together, they make the next step possible.
階 is not a kanji about reaching a dream in one great leap.
It places a small step between where we are and the place we cannot yet reach.
It turns a distant dream into the next step we can take today.

story of『階』
One evening, a little girl stood at the bottom of the stairs.
Golden light streamed through the window at the very top.
She looked upward.
Somehow, the staircase seemed much longer than usual.
That day at school, she had tried something new.
It had not gone the way she hoped, and she had come home feeling discouraged.
“Maybe I’m just not good at it.”
Her grandmother came from the kitchen and quietly stood beside her.
Then she looked up the stairs.
“Can you reach the top in a single step?”
The girl laughed.
“Of course not.”
“Then how do you get there?”
“One step at a time.”
After answering, the girl became quiet.
Her grandmother simply smiled, holding a warm cup of tea.
The girl placed her foot on the first stair.
Beginning.
Then the next.
A small step.
Above that came perseverance.
Effort.
Challenge.
Slowly, the girl continued upward.
Halfway there, she turned around.
Her grandmother was still watching from the same place below.
“Grandma, you look tiny!”
the girl laughed.
Her grandmother smiled.
“That’s because you’ve climbed so high.”
At last, the girl reached the top, where the evening light filled the landing.
Looking back, each individual stair seemed very small.
But she was standing here only because she had climbed every one of them.
The girl looked at the final word written upon the stairs.
“Dream.”
Tomorrow, she would try again.
Because now she knew how people reach places that once seemed far away.
